Threat to Kingsland Fire Station

6 December 2012 at 00:00:00

Meg joined with Hackney's elected local representatives to call on Mayor of London Boris Johnson to reconsider his plans to close Haggerston's Kingsland Fire Station.

Meg met with the Mayor of Hackney Jules Pipe, London Assembly member Jennette Arnold, local councillors and campaigners to highlight the threat to Kingsland Fire Station and to ask Boris Johnson to withdraw the plans.

This followed the leak of London Fire Authority papers which highlighted plans to close Kingsland Fire Station as well as neighbouring stations at Clerkenwell and Bethnal Green. The London Fire Authority was due to consider the closure plan on 22nd November but the decision was deferred until December.

Meg is concerned at the impact the closure of Kingsland Fire Station would have on the borough. The fire brigade attended around 4,500 incidents in Hackney in the past 12 months, which is 35 per cent higher than the London borough average of 3,328, with Kingsland Fire Station responding to 720 of these. The closure of Kingsland Fire Station would increase response times thereby putting local residents at risk and increasing the risk of fire causing serious harm or loss in the borough.

Meg said "Hackney residents rely on Kingsland Fire Station to keep them safe and secure in their homes, and Hackney has higher than the average number of incidents. I am very concerned that a large part of central Hackney would be left without adequate cover in emergencies."
