Events in the Congo

Many of you have written to me raising your concerns over the mass demonstrations taking place in the Congo.

The electoral commission in the DRC has published the polling station data and we are awaiting the release of the observer mission reports. It is important for any allegations to be investigated through the proper channels and not through violence. Similarly however the security forces must also react proportionally to the events taking place.

I have immediately written to Henry Bellingham, MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs to raise this issue and when I receive a reply, I will post it on my website.

In addition, I have also asked the Foreign office to provide an update on the rape of women in the Congo and what the International Community is doing.
