Commuters who cycle to work stand to gain from improved health and fitness, time and cost savings and a reduction in road traffic pollution. On 21st June over 40 MPs and peers took part in the All Party Parliamentary Bike Ride.
Meg Hillier, MP for Hackney South and Shoreditch, joined Emily Thornberry MP, chair of the All Party Parliamentary Cycling Group and Transport Minister Derek Twigg MP to cycle to Westminster.
Meg said, ‘Hackney has one of the highest numbers of people riding to work of any London borough. After years of being too scared to cycle to London I have just got back in the saddle again. I’m surprised at how easy it is and how you can avoid the busy roads. It’s quicker than walking or taking the bus too.”
Earlier this year Hackney won ‘best cycling borough’ in the London Transport Awards. Whilst cycling has increased London-wide by 23 per cent, in Hackney it has risen by a massive 70 per cent.
