Hackney Law Centre is based in Lower Clapton Road and employs 13 staff as well as managing voluntary support from 100 other lawyers each year.
The dedicated staff work long hours for salaries which are far less than others in local law firms. The centre has just introduced a new outreach debt adviser for housing neighbourhood offices, funded by Hackney Homes. The Centre provides full legal representation for 1000 individuals a year. It runs a number of outreach surgeries, including in schools and a well used telephone advice line – this currently has an uncertain future.
The centre advises central government on immigration matters and Fiona Lindsley from the centre was recently appointed an immigration judge. It really is a beacon of quality service, acknowledged in the recognition received by Law Centre director Nathaniel Matthews who was named the legal aid lawyer of the year (social welfare) 2006.
