Immigration Bill

As the MP for Hackney I am very concerned that many constituents will experience difficulties as a result of this legislation. Too many people wait too long to learn the outcome of their application for residency. A three year Discretionary Leave to Remain means uncertainty for longer. This, coupled with a lack of good legal advice available is causing serious problems for many Hackney residents.
Labour proposed an amendment which would force the Home Secretary to review the current rules on refugees being reunited with close family members. Unfortunately, this amendment was defeated.
I am concerned that measures in the Bill criminalising landlords who do not comply with the 'right to rent' scheme could lead to widespread discrimination in the rental market. Furthermore the Bill will make it a criminal offence for migrants without status to access a UK bank account or driving license.
I voted against the Bill at its Third Reading. The Bill has now gone to the House of Lords for further consideration.
