To highlight this year’s International Literacy Day (8 September) Meg has joined other MPs in the search for the nation’s favourite word.

Meg said, “There are close to 4 billion literate people in the world but literacy for all is still a massive challenge. 80 million children worldwide cannot go to school due to conflict or displacement”.

International Literacy Day is a reminder of the importance of literacy for all. This year focuses on the crucial link between literacy and health; giving people the capability to understand the benefits of immunisation, family planning methods and to seek medical help when needed.

UNESCO’s official celebration of International Literacy Day will be held at the African Regional Conference in Support of Global Literacy from 10 to 12 September in Mali.
