A prospective future British MP visited the Irish headquarters in Mulranny, Co Mayo, of the Safe-Home programme last week.

Meg Hillier is the Labour Parliamentary candidate for Hackney South and Shoredtich in east London, defined as a safe Labour seat. She met with staff who explained the funding and housing provision for emigrants who want to return home.

‘The Safe-Home project provides much needed support to those Irish emigrants who do not have the means to buy their own home back in Ireland but who want to return,’ said Meg.

‘The intensity of the work involved in supporting people on what can be a difficult and often emotional journey is incredible. Hats off to the team for their work.’

She added: ‘I was also pleased to speak with Dr Jerry Cowley TD. We have agreed that we will keep in touch so that we can work together on issues affecting our Irish constituents from either side of the Irish Sea.’

Meg, a former housing journalist, works in London with Irish rights campaigner and Hackney local councillor, Sally Mulready.

Meg also toured the St Brendan’s project which provides sheltered housing and nursing care for older people in Mulranny.
