Lock 7

Lock 7 is the original Hackney cycle café. Based just on the canal in Pritchard's Road at the end of Broadway Market Kathryn Burgess set it up four years ago.

As well as fixing bikes and making coffee Kathryn is providing employment for 9 people and plans to provide regular paid work experience for local young people.

After three years of asking British Waterways if she could use a piece of its nearby land as a temporary outdoor café Kathryn approached me for help.

After some persuasion British Waterways has agreed to allow temporary use of the plot of land to Lock 7. Kathryn and a team of local boys from the neighbouring estate have now cleared the plot. She is planning a series of events over the summer.

In the autumn the land will return to British Waterways for much needed additional mooring space along that stretch of the Regents Canal.

In the meantime Hackney residents and visitors to Broadway Market will have an opportunity to enjoy a summer coffee on the waterside.
