As a former carer Meg Hillier is aware of the pressures on those who care for elderly, disabled, or sick relatives. Meg said “It’s important to highlight the hidden work that carers do. Little things can be such a help – such as prescription home deliveries.”

Carers Week seeks to raise awareness of the 6 million carers in the UK today – people who look after the sick, frail or disabled friend or loved one. The 2006 theme is In Sickness and in Health and will focus on the health and emotional well-being of carers.

Meg said “One in ten adults is a carer. Many give up income, future employment prospects and pension rights to look after someone. If you are one of the many carers there is help and support available. The Government recently introduced support to help carers – many of whom give up paid work – go on holiday.”

“I benefited a great deal from social services and GP support as a carer. Don’t shoulder the burden alone, there is now a lot more help available; think of your needs too.”

Meg has signed Early Day Motion 2043 in support. EDM 2043
