Meg today questioned the Prime Minister about increasing provision of family sized social housing. Ms Hillier said “in Hackney too many are unable to move into affordable family-sized housing”.
Meg quoted Shelter’s emerging research which reveals that eight out of ten parents believe that their children’s education is being harmed by having no space to study or do their homework
Meg asked the Prime Minister whether he agreed that “we need to build more affordable family-sized homes for these young families trapped in small one and two bedroom flats?”
Household overcrowding is growing in London and in Hackney South and Shoreditch 8.5 per cent of all households are overcrowded. The increase in overcrowding is in part because of the shortage of family-sized dwellings. There is a large demand for 3-4 bed properties with the majority of the budget for new housing going towards one and two bedroom houses.
The Labour Government has increased the Housing Corporation budget to £3.9 bn per annum for England, half of which is spent in London.
