Over half of shopworkers have suffered verbal abuse from customers in the last year. One in ten has suffered physical assault.
The statistics from shopworkers’ union, USDAW show just how widespread the abuse is and that it can come from the most unlikely perpetrators. Shop staff report that Christmas time is the most difficult.
USDAW’s ‘Respect Week’ runs from 3 – 7 November and Meg is encouraging people to keep their cool this Christmas.
Meg said, “Staff in small shops in particular can be vulnerable to abuse. Small shops help make Hackney the diverse place it is. If we value them then let’s show more respect to our local shopkeepers.”
