In the last few days I have continued knocking on doors in the
constituency to say hello and get views. People have been very positive.
Last Wednesday I met with some Muslims and we had a robust discussion across a wide range of issues from ID cards, immigration, Iraq, NHS, schools etc. And the samosas afterwards were rather nice!
On Friday, I spent some time in Victoria ward. I enjoyed meeting a group at Prideaux House for lunch followed by a question and answer session. Gualter de Mello does a great job in serving the local community.
I then visited local sheltered housing blocks where I had the chance to discuss the election and the issues facing older people. I am really pleased to represnt their needs and grateful for all that the Labour government has done to help our older citizens.
On Saturday morning I spent some time at the Labour Party stall in Ridley Road market. Again, people were very positive about Labour. Some have long memories and remember back to previous Labour Governments and how they have helped working people. Ridley Road is an international market and people visit from all over London, so that was a good cross section of the population we met.
On Sunday some people may have seen me on the Politics show on BBC 1 being interviewed about child care. As I have two young children I was able to speak with some feeling about how important Surestart is to families in Hackney.
I will be at the hustings organised by the Council for Older People at the Rio Cinema, Dalston at 11am on Friday along with other candidates in this election. Come along and join in!
And on Saturday, I will be at the Shoreditch Trust Canal Cavalcade which is an all-day event with an exciting programme. I will be officially opening at 12 noon the ramp at the junction where Queensbridge goes over the canal. The Canal Arts Trail plaque will also be unveiled at that time. See you there!
Don’t forget you can call the hotline 07985 671 359 or email me using the contact home on my home page.
Best wishes,
