The street pastor scheme is a joint initiative between church communities, local government and the police and is supported by the Home Office.
The Pastors are trained volunteers who patrol between 10pm and 4am to support vulnerable people on the streets. They help in many ways from diffusing hostile situations outside pubs and clubs to waiting with vulnerable women at bus stops to ensure they get home safely.
The teams are well equipped with everything from flip flops for party goers with sore feet to sharps boxes to remove syringes from the streets.
Hackney, which is the second area of London to have street pastors since their introduction in 2003, has a team of volunteers but needs more.
