Final days to countdown!

03/05/05

I am continuing moving round the constituency knocking on doors and meeting different groups of people in the community.

I hope that the arrangement with Royal Mail has now worked out and all electors have received our leaflet which should go to all electors. My apologies to anyone who has yet to receive this message from me. My team have been hard at work in the last week, hand delivering leaflets to make sure every home is covered.

I must say my team of helpers have been fantastic. There are clearly a lot of people who believe in Labour’s cause and are prepared to put in a lot of extra and late hours to get the message across.

You can download my latest leaflet from this website.

The website is busy with quite a few enquiries coming in from people seeking my views. I have been providing answers directly to enquirers e-mailing me through this website. You can find some of them in the Q&A section of the website – please be patient as I and my team try to answer all your questions.

On Friday 29 April, I visited and spoke at a meeting at the Sulamaniye Mosque in Kingsland Road. It was a useful meeting and the discussion was positive about how much Labour has helped the Muslim community.

I was at Chatsworth Road, E5, last Saturday morning at the Labour party stall outside Wayside Community Centre, 24 Chatsworth Road, (at the Clifden Road end). Greater London Assembly Member for Hackney, Jennette Arnold, joined me in meeting residents and discussing their problems. A lot of people were telling us they are voting Labour. A number of local Labour councillors from Chatham, Kings Park and Leabridge wards were also present. My thanks to Sister Jean of Wayside Community Centre for providing some cups of tea – and even string for balloons for the children!

You should have received your postal vote by now. The deadline has gone for the distribution of them. If you have any problems, call the Electoral Registration Dept on 020 8356 5000 (Council switchboard).

You can use your postal vote right up to 10pm on May 5 but obviously, you will have to hand in personally to the polling station on May 5. All votes have to arrive by 10pm on May 5. They won’t count if they arrive by post next day!!

For those in Hoxton, there is a by election so please remember to vote for no 4 Hillier on the parliamentary paper, and no 5 McShane on the council ballot at your local polling station. My colleague Jonathan McShane is going to make a good councillor who will serve the people of Hoxton well.

By the way, I keep hearing from people in the street and doorsteps about their worries about losing or not receiving the notification card. The card tells you where your polling station is and your voting number. You do not need the notification card (delivered to your home) to go and vote – but it helps! If you need help in getting to the polling station, or have any other problems, please call us on the hotline 07985 671 359.

On Sunday 1st May and Monday 2nd May, I was out around the constituency leafleting with the team and talking to people on the doorstep.

On Monday evening, I was at a lively hustings meeting in Haggerston community centre organised by the Haggerston West TRA. People had their concerns but the discussion was positive and if elected, I am determined to talk more to some local residents to see what can be sorted out.

On Tuesday 3rd May I will be outside Kingsland Dalston station from 7.30am giving out leaflets to people going off to work. During the day, I will be leafleting and going to schools.

During Wednesday 4th May, I will be out during the day on the doorsteps and meeting various groups. Give me call if you would like to meet me. You may like to display a ‘Vote Labour’ poster for the last few days. Give the hotline a call and we will get one to you.

Polling day on Thursday is actually the fifth day of the fifth month of the fifth year of this new millennium. And Jonathan McShane is fifth on the ballot paper for Hoxton! I am hoping it will be significant not only for its numerals – but because on that day the people of Hackney South and Shoreditch returned a Labour MP to parliament.

Polling stations are open from 7am until 10 pm (0700– 2200). If you want help in getting there, call the hotline 07985 671 359 and we will try and arrange help for you.

People are very positive about Labour. They are recognising the considerable achievements we’ve made for people since 1997 – and no-one wants to go back to the bad old days of the Tories. Michael Howard is definitely not popular with people!

Don’t forget you can call the hotline on 07895 671 359, or e-mail me at www.meghillier.com.
